A strong relationship with the counselor is essential for the counseling process. The client comes to the process with a commitment for change. Sometimes the commitment is marginal and helping fortify that commitment is the initial part of our work. I believe that my most effective work is with people who struggle with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, family of origin issues and trauma. I work extensively with clients who have personality disorders (ingrained patterns of self defeating behavior). My practice is geared toward adolescents 13 years old through senior adults. I work with individuals and couples/families. I have specialized training in trauma and how faith and psychology may integrate. I work in various ways with people and have had training in CBT therapy, Gestalt therapy, Couples counseling and psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Time and personality of the client shape the approach we would take to counseling while never judging or imposing my values. For 20 years I directed the graduate programs in counseling at a small Christian university and helped prepare counselors for the next generation. Counseling incorporates discovery of self defeating behaviors, learning new patterns of behavior to replace those self defeating processes and looking forward to a hopeful future.
